S.N.S. Herning was founded by Søren Nielsen Skyt in Herning, Denmark in 1931. Skyt made his living selling hand-crafted knitwear designed with the fisherman in mind—warm enough to stand up sea winds, and rugged enough to handle the labour associated with the profession. S.N.S. Herning's knit's distinctive look is a result of what's called a bobble pattern, a knitting technique that increases the garment's insulating properties—ideal for Canadian winters. The label's added styles to its repertoire, but the means of production have remained much the same. Sweaters are still assembled at the same factory in Herning, with the same techniques that have been used since the company was founded.
